WASHINGTON – While it may come as no surprise, sports betting in Washington D.C. will be held in Capital One Arena. Earlier this week, Washington Wizards and Capitals owner Ted Leonsis announced to the American Gaming Association his plans to renovate the arena and open a public sportsbook.

According to signs posted inside the arena, sports betting in Capital One Arena will be available in 2020. Only those above the age of 21 will be able to place sports wagers here. This is an extremely exciting time for sports fans inside this city. The lottery has been criticized for its pricing and is being dwarfed by the betting action at the Capital One Arena sportsbook. The $12.2 million bet in September at the arena is nearly double the. Capital One Arena in Washington, District of Columbia, has set a precedent in the United States sports betting landscape by accepting wagers at its temporary new sportsbook, which has been converted.

Capital

Capital One Arena is likely to be the first venue to open a sportsbook, but it won’t be the last. Many restaurants and bars across the city are expressing interest in allowing sports betting. In time, there may be hundreds of places to legally make sports bets in this city.

While his plans are not set in stone, Leonsis gave some insight into what the new sports betting venue may look like.

“There will be a sportsbook in the building accessible from outside, depending on the league, depending on the event, it may be accessible from inside as well,” said Leonsis.

The Greene Turtle restaurant within the arena will most likely be the location to place sports bets, and patrons will be able to do so whether or not you have a ticket for the event going on that day. Leonsis also spoke on the ability to place live bets and accept in-game wagering.

The types of bets fans will be able to make are not limited to the Capitals or the Wizards. Sports bettors will be able to put money on other teams playing in the NHL and NBA, along with NFL, MLB, and MLS games. The bill that legalized sports betting in D.C. only included provisions for professional leagues.

The Greene Turtle Restaurant is set for reconstruction after the Wizards final home game on April 9 and will be transformed into the “Shell Raiser Lounge” for the remainder of the Capitals playoff run.

A definitive date for when the space will be able to accept sports bets has not been set, but Leonsis is hoping for a launch this fall.

Who Will Operate The Washing D.C. Sportsbook?

There are two main factors that could complicate who exactly would operate the sportsbook at Capital One Arena. The first being that even before sports betting was officially legalized in Washington D.C., the NHL and the NBA both signed a partnership with gaming company MGM Resorts.

The second being that when Washington D.C. expanded its gaming operations to include gambling on sports, the DC City Council assigned the current lottery operator, Intralot, to run the activity within the district.

The law grants exclusivity zones around Capital One Arena, Audi Field, Nationals Park, and St. Elizabeth’s East Entertainment and Sports Arena. Each facility is permitted to provide mobile wagering apps within their respective zone.

However, Leonsis did not provide details on whether or not Intralot will operate the sportsbook inside Capital One Arena and did not provide any indication at this time for whether or not he plans to unveil mobile sports betting either.
